Fukuoka Unagi Restaurants You Can Only Book by Phone
A guide to three unagi restaurants in Fukuoka and Kitakyushu where the only way to get a table is a phone call in Japanese
Unagi rewards patience, both from the chef and the diner. The eel is split, skewered, grilled, and finished with a glaze that takes years of repetition to get right. Some of the best unagi restaurants in the Fukuoka area, including one up in Kitakyushu, have built loyal followings around exactly this kind of craft, and most of them run on phone reservations alone.
A quick note: restaurant policies change. If any of these spots now appear on Tabelog with an online reservation option, book it there. If not, Rapym can make the call for you in Japanese.
Unazen
Takasago, Chuo-ku
Eleven minutes on foot from Watanabe-dori Station, in a standalone building in the Takasago neighborhood. Unazen carries a Tabelog score of 4.02 and has been selected for the Top 100 Unagi list four times, in 2018, 2019, 2022, and 2024, a level of consistency that few unagi restaurants in Kyushu can match. Twelve seats, no private rooms, open for lunch and dinner six days a week. Course menus require booking the day before, and the restaurant is upfront that it can only serve what good eel is available that day, so calling with some flexibility helps. Closed Sundays and public holidays.
Phone reservations only.

Unagi-dokoro Yamamichi Honten
Yakuin, Chuo-ku
Seven minutes from Yakuin-dori Station, run as the direct outlet of Sando Aquaculture, an eel farm based in Miyazaki Prefecture. The restaurant serves Himuka Sando Unagi, a branded farmed eel that the company raises and sells exclusively through its own restaurants, which means the supply chain is about as short as unagi gets. Sixty seats including five private rooms, each bookable in two-hour blocks starting at 11am, 1pm, 5pm, or 7pm. Tabelog score of 3.94 across 356 reviews. Closed Tuesdays.
Phone reservations only. Private rooms carry a 10 percent service charge.

Kurosaki Inakaan Hibiya
Yahatanishi, Kitakyushu
Four minutes from Kurosaki Station, in the Yahatanishi ward of Kitakyushu, about forty minutes north of central Fukuoka. Hibiya has been selected for Tabelog's Top 100 Unagi list four times, in 2018, 2019, 2022, and 2024, and carries over four hundred reviews. The kitchen uses farmed eel from Kagoshima and Miyazaki, grilled in a method the restaurant describes as feeding the fire directly, repeatedly folding the skewered eel over open flame to render out excess fat before the glaze goes on. Forty seats, wheelchair accessible, no private rooms. Reservations are only accepted on weekdays; weekends and holidays run on a first-come basis, though the long opening hours mean a table often opens up without much wait.
Phone reservations only, weekdays only. Weekends and public holidays are walk-in.
