Osaka Okonomiyaki Restaurants You Can Only Book by Phone

A guide to three of Osaka's most decorated okonomiyaki restaurants, all bookable only by phone in Japanese

Osaka Okonomiyaki Restaurants You Can Only Book by Phone

Okonomiyaki belongs to Osaka the way pizza belongs to Naples. Batter, cabbage, and toppings mixed and grilled on a hot iron plate, often right in front of you. These three restaurants have each been recognized on Tabelog's Top 100 Okonomiyaki list multiple years running, and all three take reservations by phone only.

A quick note: restaurant policies change. If any of these spots now appear on Tabelog with an online reservation option, book it there. If not, Rapym can make the call for you in Japanese.

Dontaku

Nakazakicho, Kita-ku

Six or seven minutes from Hankyu Umeda Station, down an alley in the Doyama area that most visitors walk past without noticing. Dontaku has been selected for Tabelog's Top 100 Okonomiyaki list five years running, 2019, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025, and carries a score of 3.66 across 663 reviews, the most reviewed restaurant on this list. Fifteen seats, eleven at the counter, smoking allowed. Reviews consistently describe the okonomiyaki as unusually soft and well-balanced, and the late hours, open until 4am most nights, make it a regular stop after a night out in Umeda. Closed Sundays.

Phone reservations only, though availability depends on the time slot.

Tapioka Shokudo

Teradacho, Tennoji-ku

Six minutes from Teradacho Station, in a building that looks more like a neighborhood diner than an okonomiyaki destination, which is part of why it's been featured in local media. Selected for Tabelog's Top 100 Okonomiyaki list three years running, 2023, 2024, and 2025, with a score of 3.65 across 420 reviews. Open since 2017. Twenty-two seats including a tatami room for groups. Lunch reservations are only accepted for the 11:30am opening slot; after that, seating runs first-come. Dinner is more flexible, with the restaurant generally able to work around a 5pm or 6:30pm preference. Closed Tuesdays.

Phone reservations only, with lunch limited to the opening slot.

Okonomiyaki Momiji

Tanimachi-9-chome, Tennoji-ku

Ten minutes from Uehommachi Station, in the Tanimachi-9-chome neighborhood. Momiji has the longest streak on this list, selected for Tabelog's Top 100 Okonomiyaki six times across 2018, 2019, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025. Tabelog score of 3.62 across 555 reviews. Twenty-one seats, no private rooms. Reviews specifically note a steady stream of foreign visitors alongside local regulars, and a line that tends to form within twenty minutes of opening. Open Mondays, Saturdays, and Sundays only, which is the kind of detail that's easy to miss when planning around a Tokyo-centric schedule.

Phone reservations only, available whenever the restaurant is open.

How to Book Any of These

Every restaurant on this list takes reservations by phone, in Japanese. Calling during afternoon hours between 2pm and 5pm tends to work best, though Momiji is only open Mondays, Saturdays, and Sundays, so check the day before planning a call.
